In October 1912, a would-be assassin shot Theodore Roosevelt in the chest. Despite his wound, Roosevelt would proceed to give an 84-minute campaign speech before allowing any medical attention. He began his speech by telling the audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”
